Michael Steddum was raised in California. He joined the Navy at eighteen and traveled the world on Uncle Sam’s nickel. He started off as a cook and ended his enlistment as a Draftsman Illustrator. After his enlistment was up, he found work in a gallery in San Diego operated by a national company named The Wooden Bird. The gallery specialized in publishing and sales of wildlife and western art. He worked his way up to the position of gallery manager in Edina, Minnesota. Until recently, the gallery served as his art education which benefited him over the years, especially in the business of art.

In 1990, Michael left the gallery to pursue a career as a full-time artist. Wildlife art was his primary focus at that time. A few years later, he started painting pet portraits which became www.michaelsteddum.com, an online gallery of breed-specific limited edition dog art. The works have been purchased and collected around the world with many of them selling out. Having the online gallery allowed Michael to explore and live in different parts of the country. In 1998, a one-hundred year old farmhouse in Wisconsin became his home. A few miles north of the farm he built a cabin in the woods by hand, complete with a field stone fireplace. In 2002 he moved to New York, returning to the rolling hills of Wisconsin a few years later. During this time, he produced several hundred watercolor paintings of the dogs we have come to know and love.

In 2008, a "handyman’s special" cottage in Missouri became a summer project for Michael and his wife. “It’s been a long summer,” he’s been known to say. While in Missouri, his wife took a job at Missouri Southern State University and opened a door to a formal education for each of them. College allowed Michael to expand his interests once again to subject matters that elicited his curiosity as well as improved his drawing and painting skills.
